Whirlpool Corporation named in 2022 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

Whirlpool Corporation has announced it has been named in the 2022 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) in recognition of an ongoing focus on responsible and ethical business practices.

“We are immensely proud to be acknowledged for our global efforts to drive environmental and social sustainability through our business operations, product innovation, and community engagement initiatives,” said Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our 69,000 employees around the globe who have worked hard to drive meaningful change and improve life at home and on our planet.”

In 2022, Whirlpool Corporation continued to invest in its environmental sustainability strategy to reduce its climate impact and progress toward its Net Zero emissions target in global plants and operations by 2030. Whirlpool UK’s Peterborough headquarters and manufacturing facility in Yate have already achieved the ambitious goal of zero waste to landfill. Alongside this, the company is trialling biofuel in its on-site vehicles, as well as working towards its entire fleet becoming 50 per cent electric by 2025, including company cars, engineers’ vans and delivery vehicles.

Furthermore, according to Whirlpool, it is improving its service and maintenance solutions to keep its products in use for longer and developing its appliances to increase resource efficiency and contain more recycled or recyclable materials. Appliances that are collected from customers’ homes are either recycled or refurbished, including safely removing harmful gasses from refrigeration products and recycling delivery packaging free of charge. Products are refurbished at the company’s reworks facility, based at its UK headquarters in Peterborough.

Whirlpool Corporation says is supports communities through its global corporate responsibility approach, House+Home. As part of this strategy, the company launched its UK partnership with Habitat for Humanity Great Britain (GB), a leading housing charity focused on long-term poverty alleviation through affordable social housing. The company also supports a number of other initiatives to help improve the lives of those living in the communities in which it operates, including several community projects, charity partnerships and educational schemes.

In 2022, the company was named one of Forbes 2022 ‘World’s Best Employers’ as well as included on Fortune’s Most Admired Companies for 2022. In addition, Whirlpool ranked third in Newsweek’s list of America’s Most Responsible Companies 2023.

The DJSI, including the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), were launched in 1999 as the pioneering series of global sustainability benchmarks available in the market.  Created jointly by S&P Dow Jones Indices and SAM, the DJSI combines the experience of an established index provider with the expertise of a specialist in sustainable investing to select the most sustainable companies from across 61 industries.
