Industry expert recommends appliances to buy in 2025

According to a recent survey, nearly one-third of homeowners plan to allocate the largest portion of their renovation budget to appliances. Built-in fridge freezers, boiling water taps, and energy-saving ovens are becoming increasingly popular as must-have features.

While social media has driven interest in compact heroes like air fryers and bean-to-cup coffee machines, industry experts suggest that integrated appliances still offer the best long-term value.

“Trendy gadgets like air fryers are great, but integrated units—like ovens or fridge freezers—can genuinely enhance your home’s value,” says Debra Hutt, kitchen stylist at Wren.

“They’re the foundation of a functional, future-proof kitchen.”

How to choose the best fridge-freezer for your kitchen

If you’re planning an upgrade, here’s what Debra recommends when selecting a fridge freezer—one of the most important appliances in any kitchen.

Size and fit

Integrated appliances should fit seamlessly into your kitchen design, so accurate measurements are crucial.

“Fridge freezers vary from 130cm to 200cm tall and 55cm to 80cm wide. Always leave 2–5cm of ventilation space and choose the right size based on your household’s needs.”

Large American-style models are appealing, but they require more space. Compact or integrated models are more suitable for smaller kitchens.

Budget and energy use

Larger models tend to consume more energy, so it’s worth factoring running costs into your decision.

“Entry-level fridge freezers start around £400. High-end models, including smart or American-style units, can go up to £2,000. Bigger appliances use more energy, so weigh that against your monthly bills—typically around 12p per day.”

Energy ratings

Since 2021, the UK follows a simplified A–G energy rating system. Choosing a model with a better rating helps reduce your bills and environmental impact.

“An efficient fridge freezer lowers your carbon footprint and your electricity bill. It’s a smart and sustainable investment.”

Which appliances are worth the investment?

Wren’s survey found built-in appliances are the top priority for most UK homeowners. Over 50% favoured quality integrated fridge freezers, ovens, and dishwashers.

“Built-in appliances add more value to your home than smaller gadgets or freestanding units,” says Debra. “They’re ideal if you’re planning to sell in future.”

That said, younger homeowners—especially Millennials—are embracing niche kitchen tech like air fryers, pizza ovens, and coffee stations. These reflect a growing love for cooking and entertaining at home.

Final thoughts

Whether you’re updating to sell or creating your dream kitchen, investing in integrated, energy-efficient appliances is a decision that pays off, both now and in the future.
