Smeg has revealed its iconic FAB design has been given a series of fresh updates to coincide with the brand’s landmark 70th anniversary.

Having introduced the first model back in the late 1990s, the FAB has grown from strength-to-strength. It was originally designed to make a statement against the sea of minimalist stainless steel appliances taking over the market. This was most notably demonstrated by its soft curves, retro-style design and vibrant use of colour. Today, it is available in six different sizes, from the FAB5 minibar to the family-size FAB50, alongside a variety of finishes. Customers can choose from Smeg’s collection of colourways, from pretty pastels to bold brights. Over the years, Smeg has introduced a series of limited edition designs, from Union Jack and Italian flags to denim and blackboard styles. It has even collaborated with big names such as Paul Smith, Veuve Cliquot and, most recently, fellow Italian powerhouse Dolce&Gabbana.

The new aesthetic, now available across all FAB fridges in Smeg’s repertoire, includes a series of slick updates to bring it bang up to date. These include internal LED strip lighting, detailed chrome supports and metal wine racks to the fridge’s interior. Each FAB is also now fitted with a metal back, as are all fridges in Smeg’s portfolio. Finally, Smeg has added a several new colours to the range to mark the launch, including mocha brown, teal green and a rich, festive red.

The internal makeover has been in the charge of DeepDesign, the Italian design firm responsible for creating Smeg’s line of small domestic appliances. Most recently, DeepDesign worked on the brand’s flagship London store on Regent Street St James’s which, coincidentally, will also be celebrating its first anniversary this year.

All FAB fridges benefit from an impessive A+++ energy rating – which ultimately keeps running costs down – adjustable glass shelves and a choice of a left or right hand hinge; many other brands only offer one as standard. In addition, they feature a Life Plus drawer which, with a controlled temperature of 0 degreees, will keep fruit and veg fresher for longer than standard salad crispers. Capacities vary from 33L for the mini FAB5 to a combined 467L for the bumper FAB50.
