Nina Bailey, UK Design Manager at Formica Group has compiled her kitchen trend predictions for the new year.

Nina expects 2020 to maintain the focus on wellness and incorporating it into daily routines, she suggests that this will inspire kitchen design, making cooking and eating a more grounded experience with a homely, crafted feel. Homeowners will continue to combine contemporary and traditional materials creating an eclectic aesthetic oozing with personality. In terms of colour, pallets are set to become richer and dark and monochrome colour stories will become increasingly popular as we move into the new year.

Nina comments: “Additional space can be created through methodical kitchen design and displaying what you need. In-keeping with the homely aesthetic incorporating open shelves with white crockery displayed adds a fresh, modern feel to the space and investing in hanging rails to store pots and pans frees up ample cupboard space,” adding extra personality and a lived in feel to the kitchen.

Nina continues: “As the sustainable movement continues. There will be a huge focus on making sustainable designs beautiful. Designs will be eco-conscious and include sustainable elements while remaining aesthetically pleasing.”

Key Kitchen Trends for 2020

• A focus on making our interiors more individual – as we seek unique and individual style, patterns become key – we begin to make our kitchen unique.
• Dark colour palettes are set to become more popular – sophisticated dark palettes featuring phantom black tones.
• Designs will now begin to reject ornamentation and make way for simplistic monochrome palettes.
• Traditional and contemporary materials are combined to create an eclectic look.
• Tone-on-tone palettes – this helps to create a sense of harmony, as the home continues to be a sanctuary from the outside world.
• Distressed and unrefined materials create an urban look that reminds us of trendy brutalist architecture
• Images of natural materials are in high demand – Formica HPL provides this rustic aesthetic without a colossal price tag.
• Geometric patterns are becoming more sought after – laminate, in this case, could be used as a substitute for tiles as a way to bring geometry into space.

Key Colours

• Deep moody tones will be a huge focus for 2020
• Warm autumnal tones – Amber, rust/terra tones combine well with blues, greys, and golds
• Strong mustard
• Orange and pumpkin
• Accent yellow – this is the accent colour of the year which is perceived to be cheerful and uplifting
• Vivid Cobalt Blue – will create an electric injection of colour
• Pastels – with increased saturation and more pigmented compared to what we have seen previously
• Earthy greens – from bright grass greens to greyed subtle greens to deep forest tones, these combine beautifully with wood, leather and other natural materials.
• Cloudy whites – 2020 brings a shift away from the perfect white in favour of warm neutrals

• Plinths create a tidy looking space
• Changing handles and taps to bronze or brass create a more modern finish
• LED lighting – lighter and brighter and create a modern look and feel
