Kitchens Review Queensdale Road Shaker Kitchen.

Bold & characterful – shaker design by Kitchens by Holloways

Part of a kitchen refurbishment in Notting Hill, design director Charles Elwell at Kitchens by Holloways designed a space that is filled with charm and character. The homeowner wanted something different, and with some encouragement to make some bold design decisions, the end result is a kitchen complete with unique features, brave colour choices and a beautiful combination of finishes.

The on-frame shaker style kitchen strikes the perfect balance between timeless style and modern functionality, with the added hint of industrial charm. Paired with contrasting Calacatta Marble and Zimbabwean Black Granite worktops on the island and cabinetry run, the blend of finishes and colourways adds a sense of personality that makes the space feel elegant and inviting.

To make the kitchen feel more structured and achieve a more coherent flow, Charles recommended having no wall units or extractors in view, ensuring a cleaner aesthetic. A fully tiled back wall instead of a half wall creates more impact and opting for open shelving set to the side as opposed to one long open shelf adds some needed structure – balancing out the height of the cabinetry on the opposite side. This open wall allows the backdrop to truly frame the entire kitchen, adding the desired wow-factor.

Colour was the biggest talking point when designing this kitchen. The unique shade chosen by the homeowner is Little Greene’s ‘Light Bronze Green 123’, and with some encouragement to use the colour everywhere, the kitchen is a testament to how bold design choices can truly make a space come to life. The bronze-green shade blends perfectly with the brushed bronze finishes and the tiled back wall, whilst the bold black and white chequerboard floor tiles tie the whole scheme together. Complete with black metal Crittall doors and a skylight that allows lots of light to flood the space, the kitchen becomes naturally connected to the outdoor space.
