Fisher & Paykel Red Dot Award Touchscreen Oven

Fisher & Paykel Red Dot Award 2020

Fisher & Paykel has achieved top honours in the Red Dot Awards 2020 for its latest appliance innovations.

Fisher & Paykel has been awarded two product design accolades by Red Dot, achieving the maximum number of wins one brand can receive for product design. Achieving Red Dot Awards this year are Fisher & Paykel’s new Touchscreen Oven and Column Refrigeration appliances, recognised for excellence across all aspects of their design and functionality. A Red Dot is one of the most coveted international design acknowledgements. The awards are organised by prestigious design institute, Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany.

Competition reached a record high this year with more than 6,500 products entered into the Product Design category. The adjudication process spanned several days and was based on two key criteria: an intensive examination of the products and an open discussion among jurors from all over the globe. Products were judged on their aesthetic, materials, level of craftmanship, the surface structure, ergonomics and functionality.
Fisher & Paykel Executive Vice President – Design & Brand, Mark Elmore says the plaudits are testament to Fisher & Paykel’s human-centred design approach. “Our focus right from the outset of our design process is to delve deep into the insights around user behaviour and how we can enrich the life lived around appliances. The kitchen is no longer just a place where food is prepared. It is where people come together to socialise and to spend time with family and friends. For us, great design is about making that experience a more beautiful one, not just aesthetically but in the way we interact with the kitchen. We are thrilled to have receive accolades for both of this year’s Fisher & Paykel entries,” says Mr Elmore.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot says: “I want to congratulate the award winners sincerely on their wonderful success in the Red Dot Award: Product Design. It’s always impressive to observe how the jurors try out the products in detail and sometimes end up in heated debates. It’s not easy to win those debates. So I can say with absolute confidence that the award-winning products are of top-class quality.”

The winners
Touchscreen Ovens
Fisher & Paykel’s winning touchscreen oven was many years in the making, combining expertise from a number of different parties. It was an important achievement for the design team to create a touchscreen interface that would provide an intuitive guided cooking experience to help deliver perfect cooking results for both users who have been cooking all their life and for those just starting out. The proprietary software used by Fisher & Paykel also ensures that the touchscreen interface is extremely responsive with no delay between the user touching the screen and the oven’s response. It is these small details that make such a difference when using a product in the home day in day out. Other technologies unique to Fisher & Paykel’s touchscreen oven include ActiveVent which ensures optimised moisture levels and AeroTech which circulates heat evenly for a consistent temperature throughout the cavity, helping you achieve perfect results even when cooking on multiple shelves.

RED DOT JURY STATEMENT: “The built-in oven impresses with its clear aesthetics and the use of smart technology, enabling an immediate and intuitive user experience.”

Column Refrigerators, Freezers, and Wine Columns

The second winner is one of the purest examples of Fisher & Paykel’s design philosophy – the sleek and sophisticated column refrigeration was designed using unique technology to provide modular flexibility. The Variable Temperature Zone enables the user to switch between Fridge, Pantry and Chill modes in the fridge, and Freeze, Soft-Freeze and DeepFreeze modes in the freezer – this is achieved simply at the touch of a button. To provide optimum conditions for FoodCare, Fisher & Paykel created ActiveSmart™ which is a control system that anticipates future use by sensing environmental conditions and understanding how people use your fridge. Its ability to respond to daily use means that it only uses the energy needed to help keep food fresher for longer.

RED DOT JURY STATEMENT: “This appliance combination impresses with its reduced design that meets the aesthetic requirements of modern kitchens.
