InSinkErator® supports food waste research

InSinkErator® is supporting a PhD research project, ‘The role of food waste disposers in the Circular Economy’, being undertaken by The University of Sheffield, on the potential to recover biogas from ground food waste, transported to treatment via the sewer system.

A new housing development in Upper Rissington, Gloucestershire, was allocated funding by the Local Government Association to take part in a food waste disposer pilot study to manage unavoidable food waste. The University of Sheffield aims to build on the foundations laid by the Local Government Association. InSinkErator® is co-funding the research project along with the Water Engineering Research Council (ESPRC).

As part of the project, residents of the village were invited to an open evening event, on Tuesday 17th July 2018 at the Upper Rissington Village Hall, to meet with InSinkErator®, The University of Sheffield research team and local water company, Albion Water. During the open evening, InSinkErator® participated in a panel discussion, presented food waste facts and advised of the benefits of installing an InSinkErator® food waste disposer. InSinkErator® demonstrated the Evolution 200 food waste disposer at the event, showing residents how easy and safe an InSinkErator® food waste disposer is to use.

The University of Sheffield research team and Albion Water also presented information on the research project, and the water treatment infrastructure, to the residents. Furthermore, the research team visited the local primary school on 16th July 2018 and hosted a Science Day for 60 children, aged eight and nine. The children took part in five different activities, which included conducting experiments with the research team, learning about waste as a resource and creating posters to show what food waste disposers do.

Anne Kaarlela, Marketing Communications Manager, Europe and Russia InSinkErator®, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the PhD research project as it is a topic so close to our hearts. As part of the PhD research project, The University of Sheffield research team is investigating alternative solutions to managing household food waste. An InSinkErator® food waste disposer is an ideal alternative for diverting food waste from ending up in landfill. According to WRAP1, over seven million tonnes of food and drink are wasted every year in the UK, resulting in a huge strain on landfill sites.

“InSinkErator® is an active campaigner in encouraging the disposal of food waste sustainably and is committed to providing lifestyle enhancing solutions while reducing the impact of food waste on landfill sites.”

The findings of the PhD research project, the impact of food waste on the sewer system, will be shared once published.
