Urban Industrial Style

Urban industrial styling for South West London home

Located in South West London, and home to two young professionals, the kitchen of this Victorian terraced property underwent an exciting transformation. The new kitchen was to have a modern, fresh feel, designed in a way that was more reflective of the owner’s busy, social lifestyle. One of London’s most innovative companies and known for their sleek, architectural kitchens, DesignSpace London were the perfect designers for the job.

In-keeping with the rest of the house, the layout of the room takes open plan living to the max; a raised seating area looks out over the large central island and dining table, beyond which sliding glass doors offer direct access to the garden.

The island offers a generous amount of prepping space and has been designed to incorporate a ‘social zone’, in the form of a breakfast bar. To one side of the island, a series of tall units house a full height fridge and freezer, as well as a capacious larder cupboard, and on the other, a long run of cabinets provides ample under counter storage, as well as a dedicated ‘home bar’ area.

An important part of the brief was that the working elements of the kitchen be kept hidden from view; under counter ovens were fitted into the island, keeping them in the cooking zone but out of sight, a Bora induction hob was installed flush into the island so as to be indivisible from the dark matt worktop and a Quooker tap was chosen, removing the need for a kettle. Similarly, pop up plug sockets are a feature of the island, only being visible when appliances or electronic items are in use.

The space has a moody, industrial edge; timber grain cabinetry with a horizontal sawn-effect finish is paired with Raven Honed matt black worktops. An exposed brick wall forms the backdrop to the space and is balanced by a cool concrete floor.

Designer Richard Atkins says: “The success of this kitchen lies in the fact that there is a seamless flow throughout the space – everything has been designed to maximise ease and sociability. Also, the aesthetic of the kitchen is great; it looks comfortable and inviting but also industrial and interesting.”
